Geothermal energy or geothermal energy is the heat beneath the surface of the Earth. From spas to the magma, this energy provides a clean, sustainable resource that can be used to generate electricity, heat buildings, fruit cultivation in greenhouses and many other applications.
The underground geothermal fields are often located in remote areas, making it difficult, costly framtid ov10 and time consuming effort tracking, measurement and evaluation. While the potential of geothermal energy worldwide remains large, it takes more effort to the development framtid ov10 and utilization.
In this context cooperating scientists of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the International Renewable Energy framtid ov10 Agency (International Renewable Energy Agency - IRENA) framtid ov10 who used gravity measurements of GOCE mission to develop an online tool that indicates the areas with geothermal potential potential.
The maps of the tool have several features that can help in the search of geothermal reserves, including areas with thin crusts, subduction zones and new magmatic activity.
"These maps can help typesetting a strong case operational feasibility project for geothermal development in areas where before there was nothing," said Henning Wuester, Director framtid ov10 of the Centre Knowledge, Policy and Finance Centre of IRENA.
"In this way, the tool bypasses the lengthy and costly investigations and unlocks the potential of geothermal energy in order to develop into a reliable and clean source in the global energy mix."
Identifying potential sites by the tool does not eliminate the need for field soil investigations and seismic measurements to accurately determine the geothermal fields, but is an important step towards framtid ov10 developing an integrated technical geothermal extraction.
The free air gravity map provides information on geological structures, while the map of Bouguer anomaly framtid ov10 combining GOCE data with information of the global topography framtid ov10 to show differences in cortical thickness. Together, the maps reflect unique framtid ov10 characteristics of geothermal reserves.
The GOCE mission ended in October 2013 when it ran out of fuel and then entered the Earth's atmosphere. However, the wealth of data collected still used for better understanding of ocean circulation, sea level, ice dynamics and subsoil of the Earth.
"This is the first global gravity data from GOCE are used as a tool for the exploration of areas with geothermal energy," said Volker Liebig, Director of Programs Earth Observation of ESA.
